Being a child means having direct possession of something very important and scary about the world without any aid. | Sándor Márai
Children are usually a rewarding topic to photograph. Thus, I believe an artist should avoid this subject in order to keep distance from hokum and easy success. However, these photographs are more adequate when a child is not only a cute girl or a funny boy on the picture but rather is a person coequal to their parents.

In making this series I tried to use my camera only in those situations when there was another interesting and unexpected momentum (situation, scenery or side actor): i.e. when this specific constellation becomes visible only on the photograph. It was also important not to disturb children by my presence so they do not pose to the camera but they simply take their time.

There is a remarkable phenomenon in children’s life. Adults call it unsleeping presence (or recently flow) that is well known by photographers and other artists, when you are absolutely free from the outside world and you are deeply sunk in the activity you are doing. Children live in this world and could admirably teach adults to do this. They could teach adults who should do nothing more to reach happiness and completeness but forgetting or at least ignoring all that useless knowledge and expectations that have not yet shadowed their childhood. In other words, to remember those times when understanding reasons were only sleeping, when the world was close to glorious, unspoiled and perfect. Children remind us of this peace that is lost a long time ago. | Zoltán Vancsó
